Parrott's work spoke to me so much. I was in my 20's and had experienced a horrible break up. It remains one of my favorite books.
Unfortunately, Parrott did not have a great life, and she was never recognized for this wonderful piece of literature.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8380604980853439284.post-3589296162828705832020-02-17T18:38:24.097-06:002020-02-17T18:38:24.097-06:00I enjoyed your post.

(Which was on 15th Street and Union Square East and later incorporated into S. Klein's discount department store. The hotel called the Union Place hotel was on the south west corner of Broadway and 14th Street. This hotel had many names, including Maison Doree, and in its final years the Hotel Churchill. It was immediately west of the union Square Theater.
If you Google my name and Union Square you can see the piece I wrote about the fascinating block between 4th Ave, and Broadway and 13th and 14th Streets,
Take care,
William MinifieWilliam Minifiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09961483148475488743noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8380604980853439284.post-54984610457863656562016-10-28T10:04:45.084-05:002016-10-28T10:04:45.084-05:00Thank you, Prasad. Like NY, here in California the super rich are behind the Downtown LA resurgence, and any Manhattan elite worth their salt has an LA home as well. Maybe they should sell "bi-coastal bundles."

Anyway, I loved your article, Jen.

Real estate will always be a special thing for the luxury-minded. BUT, maintaining all that wealth and all those places and things has got to be a little wearing on the body and soul. I think of Jacob Marley who was consigned to drag his possessions throughout the next world, which makes me think "micro living" may not be such a bad thing after all. The young man living in 76 square feet had more space than someone living on a good sized sail boat in Marina Del Rey. Just use your imagination. There's something to be said about not being encumbered with so many things.

I'm currently moving out of a mid-sized home and into an equally sized condo and it's got me assessing everything I own - including a piano. I believe there's a physical law wherein most normal people accumulate things to fill whatever space they are given. Hoarders will obviously up the space/stuff ratio but, regardless, we are all little forces of gravity who attract things.

But every bit of space has to be financially supported with rent, mortgage payments, taxes, upkeep. Again, the more you have, the more you have to dedicate your precious time and attention not only to maintaining it, but accumulating money to pay for it.

That makes me tired.

We're all headed to the same piece of real estate (app. 6x3 unless you go with compact urn), so instead of focusing so much on space and location, maybe it's better to focus on friends, satisfaction, curiosity, laughter and donuts.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8380604980853439284.post-64744393903981816782016-05-28T14:59:48.362-05:002016-05-28T14:59:48.362-05:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Gary E. Must have been a Sunday because there was so little foot traffic, but Central Park was crowded.

And notice all the litter! Midtown was more beautiful when I was there this spring, after 43 years. The streets were definitely cleaner this time.

1951: We visited New York that year when I was 10 years old. The vehicles and clothes sure looked familiar.
I wasn't actually there, but I remember the air raid. It caused quite a stir in the movie newsreels (not much national TV yet). It was interesting to see the films showing on the marquees. And did you notice Judy Garland at the Palace?

Wikipedia:

Although Garland appeared in concert as early as 1943, it was only when her film career stalled that she began regular concert appearances, beginning with a critically acclaimed 1951 concert series at the London Palladium. Garland set a record when she appeared for 19 weeks at the Palace Theatre in New York City, also in 1951, and her 1961 concert Judy at Carnegie Hall is often described as one of the greatest nights in show business history. She continued to tour until just three months prior to her death in 1969.

I was surprised to see how small the Palace facade really was.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18068504114136575693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8380604980853439284.post-79571540653230276502014-09-10T14:26:17.046-05:002014-09-10T14:26:17.046-05:00There is a really great documentary, The Vanishing...There is a really great documentary, The Vanishing City, about the changes in the city over the last few decades. I saw the first tier of that when i moved to NYC in '90, back when you could go drinking on A, but you have to be tough and addicted to go over to B st. As Wall Street took over Manhattan, so did the greed ethos. The Basquiat art and street ethos that Johnathan used to produce "Rent" were in full force when i was there.

I wasn't ready to leave NYC when i did in 2000, but I know that i would not be living there now if i had stayed. inkdestroyedmybrushhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09037083364689982443noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8380604980853439284.post-3546442027747031752014-08-18T17:43:42.056-05:002014-08-18T17:43:42.056-05:00Thank you, LilKittie!

It was one of a chain (begun in 1921), and had a direct connection to a famous Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles (the site of a couple of Academy Awards ceremonies, and sadly, the assassination of Robert Kennedy). So interestingly, the hotels (east and west coast) had connections that mirrored some aspects of Monroe's life. The New York hotel was demolished in 1966. The LA hotel was demolished in 2006.
